Understanding the Problem

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip or knee affects millions of people in the UK — but it is far more treatable than most people believe. The single most effective non-surgical treatment, recommended first-line by NICE, is structured exercise therapy combined with education and, where helpful, weight management. I previously delivered the hip and knee osteoarthritis exercise class and educational seminars for Mid Essex NHS services, and I bring that same structured approach into your home.

I treat patients at home across Coggeshall, Colchester, Braintree, Witham, Halstead, Kelvedon, Tiptree and Earls Colne — with travel included in the session fee. See full pricing here.

What Treatment Looks Like

Bust the myths

OA is not simply 'wear and tear' and exercise does not wear the joint out faster — quite the opposite. Understanding your condition is the first step to managing it confidently.

Build strength around the joint

Stronger muscles around an arthritic hip or knee mean less pain, better function and greater independence. Programmes are gentle to start and progress at your pace, using your own home environment.

Delay or avoid surgery — or prepare well for it

Good rehab can postpone or avoid joint replacement for many people. If surgery is the right path, 'prehab' beforehand measurably improves recovery — and I can continue your rehabilitation at home afterwards.

Common Questions

Yes — research consistently shows appropriate exercise reduces arthritic pain and improves function, and NICE recommends it as the first-line treatment. The key is the right starting point and gradual progression.
Often, yes. The severity of changes on an X-ray correlates surprisingly poorly with pain and function. Many people with significant joint changes improve substantially with strengthening and activity modification.
Yes — pre-operative strengthening ('prehab') is strongly linked to faster recovery, and I can then provide your post-operative rehabilitation at home once you're discharged.
